The Power of Image Search: A Guide on How to Find and Use Images

By Agara Barry - Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Hi guys, we are back ๐Ÿ˜‰! So you asked about 'image search' after we wrote on voice search yesterday, and we promised to do a post on it. Here we go.

I will start with saying that images are a powerful tool that enhances communication, engagement and marketing efforts. The usage of images can help support brand messaging and improve website performance amongst other things. However, finding the right image that reflects a message or resonates with a brand's identity can be a challenge. Fortunately, the solution is only a few clicks away with image search.

What is Image Search?

Image search is a search tool that enables users to search for images related to keywords typed into the search engine. The search feature is available on search engines such as Google and Bing, and it's a free and easy way to locate an image, learn more about it, and how it's been used.

How to use Image Search?

Using image search is relatively easy. Follow these six steps to conduct a search:

1. Go to the search engine of your choice ( like Google, Yahoo or Bing) and click on the images tab or icon.

2. Enter your keyword or phrase in the search bar and press enter.

3. A page of images that relate to your search appears.

4. Use the available filters to refine your search, including size, color, type, and usage rights.

5. Click the image you wish to use to view a larger version, and use the right-click feature to "Save image as."

If you're unsure whether an image is covered under copyright or there are restrictions to its use, always make sure to check the usage rights. Many search engines carry a right tool on the image or website to check its usage rights.

Image Search Tools

Google Images is one of the most popular image search tools, with more than a billion people using it each month. The search engine's built-in advanced filters can refine searches further than just keywords. One can filter by size, type of image, location, color, and the time it was created.

Reverse Image Search

Perhaps the most powerful feature of Image search engines is the ability to find similar images by allowing users to take or upload a photo, and use that as the basis for a new search. This is known as reverse image search or image lookup, and it's becoming an increasingly popular way to enhance branding and improve search results.

Applications of Image Search

There are very few limitations when it comes to applying image search. Beyond sourcing images, reverse image search can trace the usage of a specific image across the web. Industries such as fashion and furniture companies are using reverse image search technology to improve their products, while search history can be used to improve search engine algorithms.

In conclusion, Image search offers an accessible, straightforward means of finding, sourcing and checking images – and can help build brands and businesses to new heights. Whatever your goals may be, whether for personal or business use, image search is a worthwhile tool to add to your list.

Thanks.

  4. Nice one @google lens - quite informative. But can you also elaborate the thin line btwn using images for your design and copyright claims? What are the limits? What can be used or not used? From music to pictures etc. And how and where should one give credit?
